Evil keys, an explosive trap beat, and endless, Georgian flow are all kevystaysnappin needs to serve us a dynamic anthem. For, that is what “Gucci” packs; and by all accounts, it is anthemic. Tailored perfectly for the entire culture of Southern Hip-Hop, “Gucci” is a sharpshooter of a single. Although hectic, with its pulsating 808s and pounding trap snares, kevy’s performance gives the record magnitude and direction. You will easily be magnetized by his almost never-ending bars; which sway through an ATLien inflection, and various, lyrical references to other Southern hotspots. There are even a few moments wherein his adlibs are pitched through a muddy, Texan, chopped-n-skrewed filter; only increasing his homage to the South. Such is why “Gucci” is a track that every state below the Mason-Dixon can embrace. Don’t be surprised if you hear this record banging from the trunk of the car beside you; or lighting up the southerly house party you just walked in. kevystaysnappin definitely has a hit.

There’s nothing new under the sun. Especially the one beaming across the state of Florida, shining vibrantly on Miramar’s own, Tone C. In a gilded gush of autotune and rap, the Panama-born emcee takes us back a decade with his latest, radio-friendly release, “LIGHTS OUT” (feat. Israel Taylor). 

 

This track is a bubbly, torrid fusion of pop, hip-hop and R&B; reminiscent of the aesthetic that dominated much of our radio earlier in the century. The Toya Beats production is buzzing with melodious synths, backed by grandiose, 808 drum loops; sonics which all mesh to create the perfect club-rocking concoction. Tone C gives nothing short of a stellar performance. He flexes his penchant for song-writing and story-telling; flirting lyrically with a girl unknown. His solid delivery, matched with the addictive auto-tuned hooks of his feature, Israel Taylor, create a powerhouse of a record; dripping with every ounce of warmth and magnificence that attracts the lot of us to the Sunshine State. If the nature of radio records, as of late, has been suffocating, “LIGHTS OUT” is a nostalgic breath of fresh air.

Right now, North Carolina is in a state of emergency. The monstrous Hurricane Florence is whipping towards the Tar Heel State, spurring mass panic and evacuation throughout the eastern south. Despite imminent catastrophe, one man in particular remains tucked in Willmington; comforting his mother, who refuses to flee. That man is rapper/producer, Octobor, and through his interview with USA Blog Network, the Southern artist makes it clear he and his family have zero intentions of leaving. Through his recent release, we come to learn exactly why: North Carolina is his “Thing”, and will remain so until there’s no more North Carolina left. Rolling in at three minutes and thirty-one seconds, “Thing” is an exceptionally lax banger. It rivals the incoming hurricane by being a poised, tranquil breeze of a record. Over the gallop of trap drums, and automated whirl of the track’s ambient background, Octobor smoothly coasts. Absolutely nothing about his flow or delivery comes off forceful. He sounds completely at home in the comfort of speakers and a microphone; which ultimately translates into a gracious trap anthem. “Its a northside thing, southside thing / eastside thing, westside thing—“ he chants effortlessly throughout the chorus, shouting out every region his home state has to offer. Being a beacon for North Carolina in the hour it’s needed most. “Thing” is a relatable smash just waiting to explode across the mainstream. If he continues to push it, showing the world just how much talent he has to offer, every month of the year will be Octobor’s.

“Even God fears me...” ring loud and clear within the intro of Decatur duo, Boss Mayne Trill & Juney’s, summer offering, “Eastside Story”. The EP comes packed with six melodic, modern-trap bangers, in perfect allusion to their homeland of Zone 6. Comparing them to Outkast, the legendary ATLien duo before them, is made quite effortless on this album; highlighted by the specific specialties and roles each artist seems to bring to the table. By the sound of it, Boss Mayne Trill fashions most of the project’s hooks, displaying a superior control over autotune and melody (this talent exploding on tracks such as “Aaliyah”, “No Guidance”, “Nah Fr”, and “Outside”). “Outside” and “Aaliyah” happen to be two personal favorites; the former for its contagious, rhythmic cadence throughout the hook and the latter for its R&B-esque qualities. Although, both artists bring phenomenal bars and stories tobthe table, you know when Juney hits the mic, he’s there to rap. He spits with an ATLien aggression, tearing through every record with rawness and reality. The only effort exempt from this unaltered quality, is fourth track “Mlk”. Here, Juney proves he is just as formidable with melody as he is without, delivering a victorious, trap ballad. “Eastside Story” is the coronation of a talented, tag-team of rappers destined to be the next dynamic duo of Georgia. No matter how long the list of Zone 6 legends may be, Boss Mayne Trill & Juney will assuredly live up to them.

Texan rapper, Kokaine Karter, wants all of us to “HOLL UP” with his latest, enchanting single. Having been born and raised in two separate Lonestar cities, Karter combines the leaned-out, autotune swag of Houston with the grittiness of Dallas, and jumps out that cauldron blazing hot with rhythm and flow.

Featuring guest artist T2, the record is incredibly suited for the club. Its ominous melody, matched with the groove of well-placed kicks and 808s, creates an atmosphere that will have you itching to escape your seat. If that’s not enough, however, his lyrics and flow certainly will be. In smooth breezes of melody and autotune, both artists bless the beat with addictive cadences and street parables. As much as they have indeed crafted a party record, suitable for setting any nightly event on fire, they never abandon their lifestyles. The grittiness of their attitudes and surroundings are matched with the lavishness of their desires, which fuse in a sea of melody and trap verses, to create one, irrefutable banger. “HOLL UP” is an excellent, club-ready release from Kokaine Karter. Makes it impossible to overlook him among the list of Texas’s talented.

  Not a single nook or cranny in the life of Santa Cruz rapper, Recklous, goes unexplored on his latest “Cop This Mixtape” project. The twelve track opus is a melting pot of subjects and sonics all blending together to paint a unique portrait of the man behind them. The first two tracks (“L.O.R.D” and “Blocked Numba”) are scorching trap bangers, aimed at incinerating an ex-lover whose ostensibly done Recklous wrong. “I Bet You Would” strikes as an ancient, G-funk anthem; whose production could have been graced by the likes of Dr. Dre. In alignment with that aesthetic, Recklous taps into an off kilter, Eminem-esque flow near the end of his ultimate verse; tying the song together, sonically. A personal favorite, both production-wise, as well as lyrically, will be the track “Deadpool”. “Deadpool” features a spine-chilling, synth-based melody; backed by a dark, heavy brass, and galloping trap beat. On the record, Recklous dives completely into his past struggles with drug abuse and suicidal thoughts; touching are two topics that are extremely relevant to the youth of modern America. And he does so with unshakeable confidence; as if he fully knows the power of his voice is greater than any shame he may feel about his past. “Perfect 10” is a confession of the rappet struggling with finances; dealing with being kicked out, homeless and owing some significant debt. The last track, “Sextape” is a smooth, fun, melodic cut done in ode to Recklous’s new love interest. On the record, he expresses his desire to turn her into a star akin to Paris Hilton, and Kim Kardashian... by identical means. This rounds the mixtape off beautifully; having started with torment over a past relationship, and ending with hope in a new one. All in all, this is a great, wholehearted debut by Recklous; and if he continues to be this honest in his music, he will build a fanbase like no other.

Life is a movie; and South Floridian emcee, Konchynce, displays that perfectly in the latest music video for his powerful single, “My Life”. This concept is cleanly crafted by the opening of the video, wherein a slideshow of pictures, featuring the rapper, are aired on an animated, TV screen. Eventually, these images grow beyond the confines of that television, and by the start of his verse, they are fitting the full screen we see them on. Then the video, and the music it incarnates, become mutually reflective. That is because “My Life” is exactly that: a bar-filled recount of Konchynce’s journey thus far. 

Strengthened by an electronic, 808-heavy, hip-hop beat, the Florida native drops myriad rhymes regarding hatred from others, politics in the industry, and chasing his dreams, overall. He also mentions something he’s been “blessed with—“; and juxtaposed to that statement is an image of him holding a newborn child. This superbly represents the duality of his narrative. Although there are a vast amount of struggles in life we all have to cope with; there are moments in this same life that make them undeniably worth it. The track is glued together by a melodic chorus, in which Konchynce colorfully croons "Welcome to my life—", emphasized by the equally colorful haze of his video. All in all, Konchynce is a wise, passionate, and insightful emcee; and this welcome into his life, through an amazing song and visual, is an invitation you won’t regret accepting.

2018. A time when the world is ran by social media and those that are using it. With everyone constantly tuned into their media platform of choice to check out the latest and newest, sometimes its a relief to get away from it all. Virginia native, Pariyah is doing just that. The 23 year old label head/artist is back with his new-age trap anthem, "M.I.A." Pariyah who embraces being a self proclaimed loner, says the premise around his new song is just about him going off of the grid to focus on his progress. He believes that often we get caught up in what is going on in the lives of others that we don't focus enough on ourselves. I couldn't agree more. M.I.A. is jamming too. This slapper is equipped with powerful lyrics and trunk thumping production that will keep you nodding uncontrollably whether you are on or staying low off of the grid.  Ginger Bread Man is back at it with another single, “What The Business Is” in which he goes all in while the transitions accelerate towards a haunting instrumental that’s complimented by deafening beats. From a stylistic perspective, the track has balance that’s inspired by modern trap sounds such as “SurfClub”, amngst other tracks that are melodically driven, while he takes the listener into introspection mode. Tank Nitti also comes through as his skill set shines stupendously.

I must acknowledge that I enjoyed the vocal tone and structure, part of what I think makes Ginger Bread Man a dynamic artist. At some point, I felt like he’s somewhat transcendent talented. Couple that with the production which pulsates with futuristic pop, electronic and trap elements blended into a perfect work of art. The track leaves me with a taste of a seasoned artist who’s about to make an articulation of rap star’s lifestyle.

In today's hip hop world, a song is not usually a hit without a dance to go along with it. Songs like Soulja Boy's "Crank That" or 3rd Flo "Do the Heisman" are pioneers and standout tracks amongst many in the song and dance era of hip hop. Many of those artists became one hit wonders while others prove that they can last the test of time. The Official GS Boyz or more explicitly known as the G Spot Boyz have proven to be part of the latter. In 2008, the GS Boyz gave us two smashes out of the gate. The Arlington, Texas natives formed the group in 2005 independently and three years and over 1 million records sold later, they were receiving interest from industry big dogs like RCA and Sony. 

 Now, the GS Boyz are back after a brief hiatus with their new single "Off Top." "Off Top" is a different sound from when we last heard the group, but packs the same anthem potential. The hard slapping bass quakes through you speakers, making it very easy to vibe to. The song has a catchy sing a long hook that will keep you singing it hours after the song has ended, with sharp lyrical verses to make "Off Top" a complete hit.

Sonny Lansky steps into the game, introducing himself to the world with his new single “In the Trap.” “In the Trap” is an up close look of the events and trials of the life of a trapper. 


The speaker-quaking anthem, not only provides an infectious head nodding baseline but, also hands out the lyrical jewels for fans to enjoy. Lanksy’s effortless lyrical ability is displayed throughout the song with slick double entendres such as “Smell whats cookin’?, that’s the rock.” Lansky then follows up with witty metaphors where he says “I ran base like the Brewers.” Sonny Lansky packs a style reminiscent of Fabolous where he can get on a trap beat, speak the language of the streets, and still manage to whip in the skill elements that hip hop purists check for. “In the Trap” has the sound to take the streets by storm and I expect nothing but even bigger bangers from Sonny Lansky going forward.
