“Is it only when you know the pot is empty, that it’s gnawing at the corners of your mind?” croons a high-pitched, soulful sample in the beginning of Slick Mick’s lovely October release, “I Gotta Rose For These Hoes”. Once the steady shiver of a tambourine, engulfed by slick, bluesy guitars, has had its fill; a goliath, East Coast drum loop stomps into the mix, completing his puristic instrumental. As gravitating as this beat is, it gives our Sydney spitter room to further captivate us with his calm delivery and lyrical narration. This record, above all else, is aimed at the casual listener; who will press play whenever they yearn for a tranquil hip-hop song to pacify them. Slick Mick, sliding through bars regaarding his current state of life and attitude, is not seeking to overwhelm you. No, instead he maneuvers his smooth, Australian accent and endless river of rhymes, to deliver the ideal Saturday night ballad. On the brink of kicking back on the couch to relax? Throw on “I Gotta Rose For These Hoes” and let this excellent offering from Slick Mick massage those corners of your mind.

A trip to Thailand, back in 2016, turned tragic for SlickMick. He was crossing the street after a lengthy bus ride, when a car suddenly hit the Australian emcee, breaking bones and causing severe brain hemorrhage upon impact. Yet, what did break on this fateful day was SlickMick’s spirit; and although his sustained head damage now prevents him from creating new memories, it does not prevent him from creating memorable music. His recent offering, “Dance With A Car In Pattaya”, is a testament of that; being poignant, adventurous and confessional in every sense of those words. The record is glued together by a jazzy, melancholic piano sample, which is fulfilled by a steady, 90s drum loop. It is almost as if the song provides its own therapy session for the Sydney survivor; seeing as his verses float freely from his lips. Nonchalantly, he tells the story of his accident and its aftermath; with a lyrical narration that makes for a fledgling, hip-hop masterpiece. For it is records like these which are solidified in the history of the culture; and springs underground artist into the warm, rapid waters of the mainstream. Through his stream-of-conscious, confessional, freestyle-esque style, SlickMick has carved a lane all his own. One that is going to pull hundreds of thousands of fans along for the ride.

A song coming from an artiste that has had the “next to death” experience. Artist SlickMick details his journey from being “ok” to lying in a hospital bed not knowing what is really going on whether in his head or anywhere around him. This is basically a testimonial of closing out an experience in Cambodia and heading to Thailand where his world change in the blink of an eye. He could remember stepping from a bus and as he made his way to crossing the street, it all went blank when he was hit by a car and ended up in rehab where his life was now a matter of recovery or out.

Through his song, you could literally hear his passion for living and his strong courage and determination to fight his way through to full recovery. This song portrays his bravery and can definitely be a form of peace and motivation for those going through a struggle and trying to keep going. Though it may be a sad experience, his strength over-powers that and makes him a tower of strength for many in the music industry and those listening. It goes to show life experiences don’t determine your destiny but pushing through and using those said experiences as a stepping stone for greater heights. A true inspiration of fighting through physical, psychological and emotional weakness!
