Charles Williams is entering the hip hop community on a mission. Bringing his Delaware vibes and serving it with inspiration from Master P, Nas & Jay-Z, the Wilmington rapper is ready to use his platform to change society for the better. About a year ago, Williams discovered his love for making music, from that moment on – he knew where his heart truly was. And so, he built a studio in the basement of his friend’s house and started creating the foundation to his music career right then and there. Charles Williams became Chuck Chill.

Chuck Chill comesin to the spotlight with a new powerful single titled Black with an even more powerful visual to accommodate the message. The music video captures your attention as soon as it plays, with the beat dropping a couple seconds later, it lures you into the scenario. You can see Chuck Chill is minding his own business when 5-0 pulls up on him to start trouble. His lyrics flow so effortlessly with each scene as he raps about inequality and social injustice. He’s shown battling a crooked cop who’s every intention is to make his life a living hell. With this song alone, he’s making it clear what he stands for by becoming the voice of his city and he promises, he won’t let his generation down.

The musical range of genre-bending duo, Nilla Spice, certainly shines through on their newest smash, “Power Up”. Consisting of personas Cad Hollyhood and Tru Tyte, the record is inspired by both Hip-Hop and Electronic music. Unquestionably, there is a trap groove in the track; highlighted by its use of rolling hihats, dribbling kicks, and flavorful 808 claps. The Electronic element is derived from the power in their synths, which blossom irrefutably with color. At fifty seconds there is an awesomely synth-tinged breakdown, where the colors of EDM are vibrant. Soon, however, the energetic rapping of Nilla Spice commences, and you are reintroduced to his diverse flow. From rapid-fire spitting, to powerful chants of the hook, Nilla Spice showcases an undeniable talent for rapping. One that, combined with the track’s production, makes for a wide-reaching banger.

Whatever crowd Nilla Splice preforms their new single, “Hate On”, for is in for an exhilarating night. They will be possessed by the voluminous rapping; and spurred to rage at their hearts’ content. That is a testament to the power that this Tampa Bay record wields; not only through its magnificent, vocal energy, but likewise its brain-throttling instrumental. To say the least, “Hate On” is musically sophisticated. It is an edgy mesh of various genres; all fusing together to create this radical, unchartered sound. The bounce is undeniably Hip-Hop; yet, the mess of synths buzzing in the foreground are distinctively native to electronic music. Around 25 seconds into the record, a funky, analog bassline slips into the mix, and the entire atmosphere is shifted. The duo allows the joint to breathe during this section, yet eventually, he crashes back into the track; as riotous and rebellious as before. Nilla is enveloped by powerful, wailing guitars during the chorus, where he chants melodiously “Hate On”. It is the model climax to the record; and if ever performed for that aforementioned crowd, will send each person into a craze. It is records like these which carve their own space into the realm of Hip-Hop; and solidify the careers of genre-bending artists. Nilla Splice and his recent banger, “Hate On”, are at the forefront of that promise.

Add some flare to your week with this new, resounding trap smash, “Challenger”. Coming courtesy of rapper, Daniel Jackson, “Challenger” is two minutes and ten seconds of apocalyptic, modern-trap production, coupled with a fiery flow to ride it. Here, Daniel Jackson flexes an astounding affinity for song-writing; penning, and delivering a record that is nothing short of an anthem. Each bar lands perfectly along the gallop of booming 808s; highlighting Daniel’s well-timed flow and admirable vocal control. As an added bonus to this heavyweight banger, the emcee likewise gives us a visual. In perfect parallel to the ominous sonics of the record is a paradisal music video; featuring Daniel rapping in the center of the shot, from the hood of a glimmering white vehicle. He is as poised as his delivery and flow; solidifying in two minutes alone that there can be no “Challenger” to his imminent rap rise.

In a gorgeous collaboration of heavenly, puritan Hip-Hop, Virginia rapper, Kevin Calhoun, accompanied by the seraphic vocals of Breanna Martin, deliver unto us “For The World”. The record is a four minute thanks to God for blessing our DMV emcee with the basic essence of life. As he mentions through sharp, thought-provoking bars, Kevin Calhoun does not have the ideal life. Poverty, and myriad other tribulations have chipped away at the rapper, day in and day out. Yet, what he stresses over this soulful chord progression, and jogging Golden Era drums, is that the bare luxuries of life are enough to be grateful for. Family, music, and the simple ability to breathe, that we all take for granted, these are the elements that make the struggles of life tolerable. They complete him; and for that, Kevin would not change them “For The World”. This record is radiating with wisdom and maturity. A message I am certain this talented writer wants each and every listener to internalize and value. He delivers it flawlessly; and Breanna Martin’s silky, R&B hook is the ribbon on top. Thanksgiving may be over, but it’s never too late to rejoice in all the things you’re thankful for. Do so beautifully, with Kevin Calhoun’s “For The World”.

Repping Spartanburg, South Carolina, rapper Don Smooth’s recent drop, “21 Savage” is a grand-slam of modern, minimal trap music. For two minutes and eleven seconds, you will be warped into a world of turn-up raps and sparse, yet exhilarating percussion. The drum pattern creates this ideal energy for Don Smooth’s lyrics and flow. Between bars regarding his arsenal, and the Spartanburg street life, the southern rapper smoothly bounces along distorted 808s, hi-hats and claps. The absence of a melody leaves plenty of room for Don Smooth to rap circles around his competition; delivering a swift trap anthem. If the music video is of any comparison; throw this record on at your local party, and it is guaranteed to turn the entire room up a notch. Effortlessly, with this new single, “21 Savage”, Don Smooth has put a spotlight on his Spartanburg home. Only a matter of time before the entire state of South Carolina has a new face of trap.

“Come” is an almost genre-less amalgamation of emotion, soaring vibrantly from South Korea’s left-field; at the hands of Seoul creative, Sung Eun Choi. If any particular style is detectable on this record, it is the lo-fi prance of classical music melodizing the background. Otherwise, the track is fairly ambiguous; spiced solely by the arbitrary chants of Choi himself. Striking nearer to commentary than anything else, Sung Eun Choi speaks in a blend of Korean and English over the colorful backdrop. He is passionate, yet confined; allowing his voice to drift easily over the instrumental, all the while wearing his heart on the sleeve of his words. Unquestionably, this Korean artist is devoted to pushing the limits of modern music. With “Come” already surprising, who knows what eclectic creation Choi will hit us with next.

As much as Hollywood yearns to convince us, through its myriad, mainstream celebrities and entertainment, life is far from utopic. On the contrary, for most of us, it is plagued with darkness, disaster and dire tribulation. No better is this true trio magnified, than on Pennsylvanian rapper, J. Asadi’s, latest project, “Lazarus Experiment”. On this seven-track opus, the New Castle native wears his heart on his sleeve; stitched by haunting, hip-hop production and painful lyricism. Much of the rapper’s subject matter revolves around his personal plights and predicaments. His intro track, “The Invitation” maps his entire life story; one full of abuse, betrayal and suffering. Yet, the magical thing about this artist is his unstoppable willpower. You can see it in the titles of his subsequent tracks (“Never Fall”, “Keep Rollin”, and “Sky Is The Limit”), J. Asadi is not one to fall victim to his struggles. The greater message on this album is, instead of losing yourself to your painful past, use it as fuel for grinding towards a fortunate future. For that’s exactly what this emcee is determined to do. He may have been down and out in the past, but by the slam of trap drums, cataclysmic melody, and strong, lyrical delivery, J. Asadi proves to be Lazarus; resurrected, reborn and renewed, with a commitment to greatness unlike any you’ve heard before.
