No matter what production she’s singing over, Faith Walker’s vocals stick out like a diamond in the ruff. Sharp and effulgent, these harmonies will spin celestially between your headphones, with the final effect being your “Head In The Clouds”. With that being said, these Los Angeles-born/Toronto-raised songstress couldn’t have titled her EP better.

Embarking on this album destines you for an cottony, R&B joyride. Not only does Faith prove magical with her singing; but her command of the early-2000 aesthetic of R&B is equally top notch. She glides soulfully, wafting through production that forwards heavy-hitting drums, and guitar-tinged, chord-waving instrumentation. These elements give “Head In The Clouds” a musical purity and authenticity that is impossible to ignore. Soar into songs such as the title track, as well as “Love By Now”, “Catch My Heart” (feat. Orion Tukal), and “Enough Of Your Love” and the beauty of this album will illuminate; deeming Faith Walker a beacon for the indie R&B circuit. For, if one thing can be concluded from listening to “Head In The Clouds”, it is that this amorous woman is destined for astronomical stardom.

Go into MDAATH’s 2018 long-player, “MXD, Pt. II” expecting another typical, trap-rap album, you are in for a rude awakening. Do not be fooled by the clips of “Goodfellas” and “Blow” that commence the album; because the moment this Ohio rapper utters his first word, and that tranquil beat drops, your entire world will be flipped upside down. You will be suckerpunched by the intro, “Grade A”; and this onslaught will carry on for the next thirty-five minutes you are with him. MDAATH harbors his own, unorthodox way of creating a modern rap album. One that can not be easily compared to the artists and sounds that rival him. Granted, this Cleveland talent does dive into the commercial trap aesthetic with the speaker-slamming “Mexico” (feat. Donnell Kane), “Remain”, “Welcome 2 The Dusk”, and “Like That”; these jams are essential to highlighting the individuality of every other piece on the project. They draw your focus to the incredible boom-bap, lyricism and flow of “Ogz”, “Take Flight”, and “Get Up”; making you appreciate MDAATH’s noteworthy potential. With his unique subject matter, crossing topics of the streets, yearn for wealth, and praise of God; alongside his shining use of rhythm and melody, many of these tracks strike as songs only MDAATH could create. He absolutely has his own handle of the art of rap; and with the versatility displayed on this radiant “MXD, Pt. II”, he is only a handshake away from a mainstream break.

Christiano Can

"F . A . N . S"

Silky, soulful and smooth. Those three words will be the first and only rebounding through your mind, once play is clicked on Christiano Can’s “F.A.N.S” extended-play. As the rapper’s debut project, “F.A.N.S” seeks to make a grandiose introduction; and it delivers that statement in more eclectic ways than one. First and foremost, the soulful, sophisticated textures of this music make it a awe-striking, pleasant listen from the jump. Golden horns, colorful chords, and a luscious female vocal form a dreamscape out of the intro-track “D.A.F.H.A.H”. Style changes as the tape progresses; with a variety of sounds, rhythms and grooves, erupting from the depths of the mix. Raw, quirky Hip-Hop is at the root of “Oddly Awkward” (Neo-Soul gushing throughout its remix), and pure, undulating Funk bubbling about the final track, “I’m Only Crazy”. Alongside this evidence of Christiano Can’s uniqueness as an artist, there is the overwhelming proof of his competence as a rapper. As the EP surges on, Christiano draws from myriad flows. On the track, “Oddly Awkward”, something Eminem-esque is transpiring; with our genre-rapper having the lyrics to do it justice, as well. He is nonchalant on the remix, smooth on the intro-track, and energetic on the out. As sporadic as “F.A.N.S” is as a body of work, it is immensely impressive and certainly satisfying. All over it is the mark of true musical artistry; and we can do nothing but look forward to Christiano Can’s drops on the 5th of every month this year. Fingers crossed, they’ll be as jaw-dropping as this.

Back in 2006, legendary New York emcee, Nas, declared that Hip-Hop was dead. The insurgence of autotune, melodies, and growing “pop” aesthetic in the music, made this declaration incredibly logical. Even modern day, where the culture is leaning further and further towards a commodity instead of artform; Golden Hip-Hop seems to have lost its place with the turn of the century. That’s what makes rap act, Lockness Carnival’s, recent release “Tickets To The Dope Show” such a blindsided sucker-punch; loud enough to throttle the graveyard, and awaken that Golden Age artistry from its deathly slumber. “Tickets To The Dope Show” is a seven-track resurrection of one of the most celebrated eras of rap; hearkening back to the 90s time period with a beautiful blend of lyricism and old-school production. The only exception to this is the second track, “Urban Litty” which features a more new-age, electronic beat. Everything else follows a strict, satisfying rubric; with which the emcee, Dark Angel, shines impeccably across his producer, Strange’s, instrumentation. Dark Angel has a powerful affinity with imagery and storytelling; and he uses such to paint the most polarizing portraits. There are strong horrorcore themes locked in the stories of “Margo Santana” and “Hector”, yet backed by Strange’s warm, vinyl-singed primeval production, this imagery becomes eerily gorgeous. Another great element of this duo is that they do not solely rely on music to tell their tales. In the middle of the project, there are skits and snippets that fit flawlessly between Angel’s own verses, giving his stories even greater dimensionality. “Tickets To The Dope Show” is an outstanding blast to the past from two amazing creatives. If Hip-Hop is dead, they’ll be of the few to thank for its revival.

Life is a movie; and South Floridian emcee, Konchynce, displays that perfectly in the latest music video for his powerful single, “My Life”. This concept is cleanly crafted by the opening of the video, wherein a slideshow of pictures, featuring the rapper, are aired on an animated, TV screen. Eventually, these images grow beyond the confines of that television, and by the start of his verse, they are fitting the full screen we see them on. Then the video, and the music it incarnates, become mutually reflective. That is because “My Life” is exactly that: a bar-filled recount of Konchynce’s journey thus far.

Strengthened by an electronic, 808-heavy, hip-hop beat, the Florida native drops myriad rhymes regarding hatred from others, politics in the industry, and chasing his dreams, overall. He also mentions something he’s been “blessed with—“; and juxtaposed to that statement is an image of him holding a newborn child. This superbly represents the duality of his narrative. Although there are a vast amount of struggles in life we all have to cope with; there are moments in this same life that make them undeniably worth it. The track is glued together by a melodic chorus, in which Konchynce colorfully croons "Welcome to my life—", emphasized by the equally colorful haze of his video. All in all, Konchynce is a wise, passionate, and insightful emcee; and this welcome into his life, through an amazing song and visual, is an invitation you won’t regret accepting.

"Gotta hustle everyday, thats all I know—" rings like a mantra on the hook of Los Angeles rapper, RAJ WILL’s, latest, titanic single “Hustle”. This Chris Beach-produced banger has all the makings of an anthem: rhythmic flow, chantable chorus, quotable lyrics and a bouncy, trap beat. “Hustle” begins with a progression of hazy, atmospheric chords, fulfilled by a prancing, futuristic synth. These provide the melodic canvas for the beat; and soon after their introduction, a pattern of drums is splattered onto the portrait. The drums are upbeat and conventional; evidence that Beach is skilled at tailoring a simple, yet infectious vibe. What happens next is evidence WILL, our rapper, is skilled at everything else needed for a national, Hip-Hop hit. The West Coast spitter hits the beat running, dropping lyrical jewels in a flurry of conversational rhymes. "Quality over the quantity, and clarity over stupidity—" he raps smoothly within his first verse, showing just how little he cares about wordplay or metaphors.

What RAJ WILL cares most about is spitting with poise and sending a message. That message is to "Make a couple stacks, spend a bit / Make it right back, that’s without a doubt—". If ever you are feeling unmotivated, no matter your profession, throw on this two minute, Billboard-ready single and you are guaranteed to bounce right back to that “Hustle” you do so well.

This track draws the listener to moments that bring out memories of his troubled early adulthood through the rhythmic friction. The song was originally unveiled on his debut album “Dare To Dream” and carries that same timeless sort of elegance, but with a new edgy vibe. You will be enchanted by the way Rayne throws himself all-in as he offers a mystifying glance of heartache and its repercussions.
