Why they always fuckin’ with me? No, I don’t give a fuck ‘bout One Time!” Since the reign of T-Pain, the city of Tallahassee has been starved of a star. Places such as Broward County and Miami have been the focus-point of Florida Hip-Hop for years now, leaving T-Town silently in the shadows. That is until K'NO dropped. Although the rapper is now based out of Los Angeles, he represents Tallahassee whole-heartedly; using his savage 2019 single, “ONE TIME”, to cast some rays back on his Gunshine home. Certainly, a star resides in this lyricist, capable of ascribing another face to Tallahassee’s growing list of greats. Only difference between K'NO, and the autotune icon before him, is that this emcee’s artistry hardly caters to the radio. Over hats, snares, and 808s, K'NO is inexplicably cutthroat. His bars are riddled with the ruthless realities of Tallahassee’s streets, matched with clever metaphors regarding the life he lives within them. “ONE TIME” is not a single detail shy of the grittiness, swagger and grime overtaking other areas of Florida. In fact, it may be even better, given that it pumps with an energy only K'NO can accord. This record will be dropping on all platforms May 23rd, and an album will be following it as soon as Miso Rich Entertainment gives the word. Until then, you can catch K'NO’s “ONE TIME” on Youtube; and watch this T-Town talent’s numbers quickly climb.

California alternative rap artist and producer Does Matter delivers his latest album, West Toast, that features 25 exclusive tracks. Reminiscent of early Odd Future and Lil B, his sound ranges from experimental to dark to strange as he pretty much does whatever he likes on each song. What stands out throughout the album Does Matter’s shocking lyrical content that can either get a little scary, a little kinky or a little out there, hence the outer space theme on the album’s artwork. Although his voice mainly stays in a 21 Savage-like monotone throughout West Toast, Does’ energy level picks up a bit on tracks like “Here to Freestyle the Freestyle” where he shows up to drop some hot ones over hard-hitting, bass-heavy production. A highlight on the album is the closing track “Rich with No Money, Famous with No Fame” that has a mean bassline and displays a more energetic Does with one of the waviest flow on the project. If you’re looking for something totally out of the ordinary and strangely cool, check out Does Matter’s West Toast today.

There is always a diamond in the ruff. For Burnsville, Minnesota, the multifaceted collective, On Our Own, is precisely that jewel; and summer 2019 may be their defining, shining moment. At least as far as one of their member’s, OOOAndre, latest release can measure; for, “Switch Up” is a modern-trap gem worthy of an imminent crowning. Although the Midwestern crew are well-versed in both R&B and Hip-Hop, “Switch Up” leans ostensibly on their thunderous, trap potential. It is a quintessential banger of today’s sound; fueled by pummeling 808s, invigorating rhythm, and OOOAndre’s unique, yet befitting flow. Obviously, he is the man OOO can go to for a irresistible hit. The way this Gopher State talent maneuvers through the beat simply exudes effortlessness; making “Switch Up” likely a natural phenomenon for ‘Dre. If that is the case, there are tons of records just as potent as this club-ready anthem, hidden within the On Our Own archives, just waiting to be dropped. The moment they are, following the promised success of “Switch Up”, the diamond will no longer be in the ruff. It will be crowning princes as they become kings of the new-age, Hip-Hop scene.

Man-E Man knows exactly what he is doing. Not only is he authentically conferring himself through the music he’s presenting, but he is likewise bringing a new sound to Oakland, California; and “Maintain” is three minutes of absolute proof. Coupled with a vivid music video, featuring the510man cooling in his Bay Area abode, “Maintain” is a colossal, West Coast offering. It barters the Hyphy bounce that The Town immortalized, for the rumbling and rhythmic sensibilities of modern-trap; morphing “Maintain” from the danceable single it would have been, into a street-hardened anthem. Yet, you should not mistaken this appeal to our modern climate of Hip-Hop, for an abandonment of Oakland rap. No, Man-E Man makes certain that his home turf is equivocally represented, proffering lyric after lyric dedicated to the 510. The attitude and energy of O-Town is undeniable on this record; delivered over rolling 808s and an ominous melody, through the placid inflection that the lot of our West Coast greats are known for. As vehemently as the likes of Too Short, Philthy Rich, and Mistah F.A.B, Man-E Man also lyrically crusades for Oakland’s recognition. And he’ll be damned if, after this titanic single, Hip-Hop’s new school does not acknowledge what the Bright Side of the Bay has to offer.

His latest mixtape is on the way, and in that vein, Jody Moet could not resist giving us a taste. That taste is “Hold Up”: a bubbly, yet torrid showcase of this Northwestern emcee’s lyrical and emotional capacity. Being one of the most recent drops from his projected full-length, LIONHEARTED, it should come as no surprise that this three-minute banger completely embodies the spirit of his mixtape’s title. Sidestep the tropical essence of “Hold Up”’s melodies and instrumentation, and you are left with growling 808’s, prancing percussions, and a roar of relative rhymes. For, within these well-rapped verses, Jody Moet bears the dint of his lion-esque soul. He has been betrayed and abandoned more times than he can count; yet, just as the trap drums continue to beat throughout the mix, so has his heart, throughout every turmoil he’s encountered. This determination to survive and overcome, that he reminds us of with every bar he delivers, is no different from the king of the jungle’s; proving that Joey Moet is the LIONHEARTED himself. “Hold Up” is a motivating anthem in that regard. A three-minute reminder that you too can overcome life’s catastrophes, no matter their capacities. In need of a banger whose message is just as great as its groove? Look no further than “Hold Up”; and keep your ears open for LIONHEARTED, dropping June 28th.
